Welcome to day two of our compost appreciation week! Today we will learn ways to use compost for gardening purposes. Compost helps soil naturally fend off weeds and pests without having to use potentially harmful chemicals. To make this happen, spread 3-4 inches of compost over the new beds, use a spade to combine the top 8-12 inches and then rake over the area. Compost can also be used in homemade tree/shrub and flower/veggie potting soil. 

Tree/Shrub Potting Soil:
3 gallons compost​
2.5 gallons coarse sand ​
3 gallons peat moss ​
2.5 gallons composted pine bark ​
3 gallons perlite ​
2 Tbsp lime ​
1 cup granular organic fertilizer ​

Each day we will share fun facts about composting, its importance and how we can all engage in the process to improve our homes, communities and planet. Today we will start by explaining what composting is and how the process is used at our facility. Composting is the recycling of organic matter into natural fertilizer that enhances plants and soil. In fact, it is often referred to by farmers as "black gold" because of the quality it brings to their crops.
